OUR SUFFICIENCY

Following the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, ’01, a recording artist bearing the stage name of Five for Fighting became popular with the song, “Superman (It’s Not Easy),” in which he imagines what it would be like as a superhero.  Yet, in reality  he  struggles  with   his  personal  inadequacies.  We all would like to think of ourselves as capable of facing all our problems with unfaltering courage, and having the strength to solve them.  However, if we’re honest with ourselves we have to admit our personal strength is not sufficient.

However, the Christian has a source that even Superman would envy.  We are enabled to overcome temptations and gain victories not through our own resources, but through God’s.  As Paul wrote, “Not that we are sufficient of ourselves to think of anything as being from ourselves, but our sufficiency is from God” (2 Cor. 3:5)  He makes the difference.
