The Man Of Sorrows There are many references in the Old Testament that prophesy of Jesus Christ, but none is as clear and specific as Isaiah 53, written 700 years before Jesus was born. In verse 3a Isaiah wrote by inspiration, “He is despised and rejected of men: a man of sorrows and acquainted with grief.” The Gospels make frequent reference to Jesus’ sorrows. One of His chief sorrows, no doubt, was the rejection by His own countrymen. He “came unto his own, and his own received him not” (John 1:11). He came with the full understanding that He must suffer and die if we were to live, but this did not deter Him. As He approached the time for His crucifixion, He said, “My soul is exceeding sorrowful, even unto death” (Mark 13:34). With all of His personal sorrows, He also bore ours. Isaiah 53:4a reads, “Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows.” Indeed, we may cast all our cares upon Him, for “He careth for you” (1 Peter 5:7). Our greatest care and sorrow is that of the burden of sin, but even that He bore for us: “He was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities” (Isa. 53:5).
